Duddu Satya Venkata Surya Subramanya Ganesh Sharma Dravid of Annavaram has been appointed as the ‘Peethadhipathi”(head pontiff) of the famous Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu.
Kanchi Peetham Srikaryam Manager Challa Viswanatha Sastry said on Friday that Kanchi Kamakoti Peethadhipati Jagadguru Vijayendra Saraswathi Sankaracharya will give him a “Sanyasa deeksha” on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya on The 30th of April.
Ganesh Sharma was born to Duddu Dhanvantari and Mangadevi.His mother is a housewife while his father was working as a pujari of Annavaram Devasthanam. Ganesh Sharma studied Rigveda at the age of six at Ratnakara Bhattu and became an expert.
Later, he worked as a pandit at the Basara Gnana Saraswati Devasthanam in Telangana. Vijayendra Saraswati, who came on a tour of Basara at that time, took him to the Shankara Mutt. There, Vijayendra Saraswati himself trained Ganesh Sharma in logic(tarka shastra) and mimamsa as well as in Samaveda and Yajurveda.
On January 28, 2018, Vijayendra Saraswati, who was then the “Uttaradhikaari” was sworn in as the 70th Peethadhipati(head pontiff) after the demise of Jayendra Saraswathi . For the next six years, the selection of the successor was postponed. Vijayendra Saraswathi will also participate in the Adi Shankara Jayanti celebrations at Kanchi Peetham on May 2. Local pandits, priests, villagers and Basara Devasthanam staff expressed happiness over the appointment of Ganesh Sharma.
