What tech can do?

The Telangana Public Service Commission (TGPSC) has launched a sweeping set of reforms aimed at restoring credibility to its examination system and addressing long-standing problems of question paper leaks, delays and lack of transparency. The commission will increasingly rely on artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain technology and digital systems from question paper preparation to the declaration of results, reducing human intervention at every stage.
For years, aspirants for government jobs in Telangana faced repeated setbacks. Question paper leaks led to re-examinations, results were delayed for months, recruitment processes were cancelled and court cases prolonged uncertainty. These problems damaged the commission’s reputation and left thousands of candidates in limbo. Under the new system, a large digital question bank containing lakhs of questions is being created with AI assistance.
Question papers will be generated only a few hours before examinations, sharply reducing the window for leaks. Blockchain technology will secure the papers and maintain a permanent record whenever a file is transferred between computers.
The system will enable officials to track who accessed a question paper, when and from where, creating an unalterable audit trail. AI will also monitor examination and result data for suspicious patterns, including unusually high scores at particular centres or anomalies involving candidates, invigilators and staff. OMR evaluation and merit-list preparation will largely be digitised to minimise human error and manipulation.
The commission aims to declare results within two to three months of examinations, significantly faster than in the past. Officials say restoring candidates’ confidence is as important as improving technology, given the uncertainty caused by leaks, re-examinations and litigation.
The reforms will also change the recruitment notification system. Instead of sporadic advertisements followed by long gaps, TGPSC plans to issue multiple notifications in quick succession for vacancies across departments. The steady flow of recruitment opportunities is expected to help aspirants plan their preparation and keep the recruitment pipeline active.
Officials have set an ambitious goal of transforming TGPSC into a model public service commission. However, the success of the reforms will depend on effective implementation, staff training and continuous monitoring of the new systems.
The technology-driven approach marks a clear departure from manual processes that previously left the examination system vulnerable to leaks and delays. If implemented effectively, AI-based question generation and anomaly detection, blockchain-based paper tracking and end-to-end digital processing could reduce malpractice and accelerate recruitment.
For Telangana’s unemployed youth, the reforms offer the prospect of a more predictable, transparent and trustworthy selection process. With the first batch of new notifications expected soon, the coming months will determine whether TGPSC can translate its technology plans into a reliable examination regime and restore candidates’ confidence.
