YSR Congress Party leader and former minister Ambati Rambabu launched a day-long hunger strike on Saturday, protesting the alleged attack on his residence and office, and demanding immediate arrest of those responsible. The protest, held from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., drew support from party leaders and cadres, intensifying political tensions in the state.
Addressing the media during the protest, Rambabu strongly criticised the coalition government and the police, alleging selective action and bias. “I was arrested and kept in jail for 18 days on the pretext of criticising the Chief Minister. But those who attacked my house, damaged vehicles and furniture, were they even detained for 18 minutes?” he questioned.
He alleged that the incident occurred in full view of police personnel, accusing them of negligence and inaction. Rambabu demanded the immediate suspension of two Circle Inspectors (CIs), holding them responsible for failing to prevent the attack.
Escalating his allegations, the former minister claimed that the incident had political backing, naming Nara Lokesh and Union Minister Pemmasani Chandrasekhar as being behind the attack. He further alleged that a culture of violence was being encouraged in Guntur under the current political environment.
Rambabu also made serious allegations regarding his earlier arrest, stating that he was subjected to attempted custodial torture at Nallapadu Police Station. “The injuries I sustained have not healed yet. Trying to intimidate me is a mistake. I will continue my fight for justice, even at the cost of my life,” he asserted.
The hunger strike saw participation from several YSRCP leaders, including MLC Appireddy, along with party representatives Noori Fatima and Diamond Babu, who extended their solidarity.
