World leaders welcome US-Iran breakthrough

significant moment | Politicians praise ceasefire accord, urge implementation and regional stability at the earliest

Leaders around the world have welcomed a breakthrough agreement between Iran and the US to end months of intense conflict, signalling strong international support for the newly implemented ceasefire.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres congratulated both sides on the peace deal. He thanked Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and others for supporting the negotiations.

UK PM Keir Starmer welcomed the US-Iran deal and offered British support for technical talks. Italian PM Giorgia Meloni said Rome could join a naval mission to help fully reopen the strait. Qatar PM Sheikh Moha­mmed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani welcomed the MoU and pledged Doha’s continued support for the next phase of diplomatic negotiations.

France welcomed the US-Iran agreement and called for its swift implementation to reopen the strait unconditionally. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said it was a significant development for regional peace and praised mediation efforts by Pakistan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Japan also welcomed the agreement, saying it could pave the way for regional stability and global economic recovery. Germany said the deal could stabilise the region, and stressed on the importance of its implementation.

European Commission Pre­sident Ursula von der Leyen stressed on the importance of restoring “toll-free” freedom of navigation via the strait. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said Beijing hoped both sides would sign the first phase of the memorandum as planned and praised Pakist­an’s mediation efforts. Australian PM Anthony Albanese welcomed the deal and called on both sides to show continued restraint. New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters said pivotal, constructive deal was a step towards reducing tensions and promoting stability crucial to economic security.

Lebanon’s Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri welcomed the agreement, saying it would help lay the foundations for regional security and stability, including in Lebanon. President Joseph Aoun welcomed the pact, saying he appreciated Lebanon’s security and stability were included. A Hezbollah official said the group has not carried out any strike since the pact was announced.
