In a major push to decentralise tertiary healthcare in Telangana, Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha announced that the State’s second-largest government cancer hospital—after the MNJ Institute of Oncology in Hyderabad—will be established in Warangal.

The proposed Warangal Regional Cancer Hospital will provide advanced oncology diagnostics and specialised treatment facilities to patients across the erstwhile Warangal district and the broader northern Telangana region, significantly reducing their reliance on Hyderabad-based hospitals.

Speaking at a review meeting at the Secretariat on Tuesday, Rajanarsimha also confirmed that the state-of-the-art Warangal Super Specialty Hospital currently under construction will become fully operational by the end of this year.

The joint review, conducted alongside Minister for Environment, Forests, and Endowments Konda Surekha and MLAs of the erstwhile Warangal district, evaluated medical service delivery, staff strength, and facility readiness across Warangal, Hanamkonda, and Jangaon districts.

Officials were instructed to streamline hospital administration and ensure uninterrupted supply chains for essential medicine across all local healthcare centres.

During the meeting, the MLAs briefed the Health Minister on the medical services being provided at hospitals in their respective constituencies and the measures being taken to strengthen the facilities.

On the occasion, Rajanarsimha directed the officials to consider the suggestions made by the MLAs and examine the issues raised by them, instructing the concerned authorities to take immediate action.

"At present, medical services in 29 specialties are being provided at MGM Hospital in Warangal, while services in another nine super-specialties will be launched shortly," he said.

The Minister directed the Health Secretary to initiate the necessary measures immediately for this purpose. He said that the Warangal Super Specialty Hospital would be developed as a major healthcare hub catering to all types of medical needs of people across northern Telangana.

Rajanarsimha further stated that Letters of Credit (LOCs), on the lines of those sanctioned for NIMS, would be issued for the Warangal Super Specialty Hospital.

Chongthu, Health and Family Welfare Commissioner Dr Sangeetha Satyanarayana, Director of Medical Education (DME) Vani, Director of Public Health Ravinder Naik, along with district health officials and hospital superintendents, attended the meeting.
