Govt plans to boost fish production

Minister for Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries Vakiti Srihari announced that the State is formulating a comprehensive roadmap to expand fish production across 26,000 tanks and 100 reservoirs while upgrading welfare assets for local fishermen.

Speaking at a meeting with presidents and promoters of district-level fishermen cooperative societies at the Ministers’ Quarters on Tuesday, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernising inland fisheries and resolving grassroots issues.

Vakiti Srihari said the government was formulating an action plan to provide insurance cover, mopeds and retail outlet shops for fishermen. He said special meetings with presidents of district fishermen cooperative societies would be held once every three months to review their problems.

The Minister assured that the government would continue the free distribution of fish fingerlings and make special efforts to release pending dues owed to fishermen.

The government is also examining the possibility of including fish in the midday meal programme to improve the nutritional intake of students. Steps will be taken to resolve membership-related disputes in cooperative societies at various levels, from districts to villages, the Minister said.

Vakiti Srihari stated that once the integrated fish market currently under construction at Koheda, Hyderabad, is completed, it will facilitate the online sale and distribution of fish. He said the government had already cleared insurance claims worth Rs. 1.34 crore relating to fishermen.

The Minister also assured the presidents of fishermen cooperative societies that he would discuss the issue of protocol with the government and make efforts to ensure an appropriate decision.

Vakiti Srihari reiterated that the State government was according the highest priority to the welfare and economic development of fishermen and would continue to stand by them in resolving their problems.
