For many parents, the word 'autism' brings fear. For society, it brings myths. It's time we understand it with clarity and compassion. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neuro-developmental condition. It means the brain processes the world differently. It is not a disease, not caused by bad parenting, or vaccines. It is not something to be cured, but to be understood and supported.
A person with autism may have differences in three areas: communication, social interaction, and behavior. Some may not speak much; some may speak a lot about their favorite topic. Some may avoid eye contact, some may find loud sounds, bright lights, or crowds overwhelming. Some like strict routine and repeat actions that give them comfort. Autism has a strong genetic and neurodevelopmental basis and does not have a single environmental cause.
Hence parents must see “Is the child's developmental environment providing enough opportunities for human connection, communication and learning.” If you notice above signs in any child, please refer/speak to a mental health professional like clinical psychologist or psychiatrist.
Myths vs Reality
Myth: Autistic children don't love their parents.
Reality: They love deeply but show it differently.
Myth: They cannot learn.
Reality: They learn differently. With early support, therapy, and inclusive education, they learn remarkably.
