Three-time Olympic canoeist arrested, denies allegations

Washington: US President Donald Trump claimed on Saturday federal authorities had made multiple arrests of people allegedly vandalising the Reflecting Pool in Washington, as questions continued over problems with the over $14 million rehabilitation project launched for the nation’s 250th anniversary.

The pool, which Trump said had been restored with an “American flag blue” lining after years of algae-stained green water, quickly developed fresh problems after reopening. Algae returned despite chemical treatment, while sections of the blue coating began peeling away.

In a social media post on Friday, Trump wrote: “We’ve had some real problems with Vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool. Just like three days ago, they destroyed the grass outside of the Pool, they've also done everything possible to hurt the inside surface that was just installed.”

Trump provided no evidence to support the claim. The US Park Police, National Park Service and Interior Department did not respond to requests for comment.

On Saturday, Trump said Park Police had "arrested multiple individuals for vandalizing our Nation's magnificent Reflecting Pool" and described the alleged acts as serious crimes against national monuments.

One of those detained was David Hearn, 67, of Bethesda, Maryland, a former Olympic canoe racer. Hearn said he had stopped at the pool during a bike ride and briefly touched a peeling section of the new coating out of curiosity. Hearn said he released the material when instructed by a park worker but was detained by National Guard troops and Park Police for about five hours before being released. He is due to appear in court next month.

Trump alleged unknown individuals had used chemicals to damage the Reflecting Pool, drawing a comparison with a separate probe into markings recently discovered on the National Mall.

I’m a curious citizen. I reached down to see what it felt like. It was very rubbery.
