A large-scale protest led by the Telangana Rajyadhikara Party(TRP) at Indira Park on Sunday drew thousands of parents, students, youth, and party workers from across the state against what the party described as rampant fee exploitation by private educational institutions.
Branded as a “Maha Dharna,” the demonstration was held despite intense summer heat and witnessed strong public participation. Protesters raised slogans condemning the commercialization of education and accusing the government of failing to control rising educational costs.
Addressing the gathering, TRP president Teenmaar Mallanna alleged that education in the state has become a profit-driven business. He said private institutions were collecting lakhs of rupees under various heads such as admission fees, donations, transport, and material charges, placing severe financial pressure on middle-class and poor families.
Mallanna argued that in many cases, a family’s annual income is lower than the cost of educating a single child for one year. He termed the current system “daylight robbery” and claimed that fear, rather than quality education, was being sold to parents.
He also criticized the lack of strict fee regulation in Telangana compared to other states and accused the government of neglecting public education. According to him, while nearly 1,200 government schools are weakening, permissions for around 2,500 private institutions continue to rise.
The TRP demanded strict regulation of private school and college fees, transparency in institutional finances, full implementation of the Right to Education Act, and strengthening of government schools.
Mallanna warned that the agitation would continue statewide until reforms were introduced.
