A 14-year-old boy from Hayathnagar, who suffered for nearly five months with persistent vomiting and severe digestive problems, recovered completely after doctors at CARE Hospitals diagnosed a rare Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) Syndrome and performed advanced minimally invasive surgery.
Shiva Durga Reddy initially developed repeated vomiting, which later worsened into severe weakness, inability to eat properly and constipation. Despite visiting multiple hospitals and undergoing several investigations and medications, doctors failed to identify the exact cause behind his deteriorating health.
The family later approached Dr. Bhupathi Rajendra Prasad, Senior Consultant and Head of Surgical Gastroenterology and Robotic Surgery at CARE Hospitals, Malakpet. After examining the patient and reviewing his medical history, the doctor suspected the rare SMA Syndrome, a condition in which a part of the small intestine gets compressed between major blood vessels, causing persistent vomiting, abdominal pain and severe digestive complications.
Although an initial CECT abdomen scan report described the condition as normal, Dr. Bhupathi personally reviewed the CT films and discussed the case with radiologists before advising a repeat evaluation, which finally confirmed the diagnosis.
The teenager then underwent a successful laparoscopic duodenojejunostomy, an advanced minimally invasive surgery to bypass the compressed intestine. He was discharged within three days and has now returned to normal life symptom-free.
Hospital officials said the case highlights the importance of clinical expertise, persistence and multidisciplinary teamwork in diagnosing rare disorders often mistaken for common gastric illnesses.
