Emphasising that determination and resilience can overcome any barrier, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Education and IT Nara Lokesh on Tuesday flagged off a first-of-its-kind expedition to the Everest Base Camp by a team of specially-abled students. The initiative, undertaken by the state government under Samagra Shiksha, marks a pioneering effort in India to organise a high-altitude adventure trek exclusively for students with special needs.

The 16-day expedition, scheduled from April 15 to 30, will see a 21-member team, including eight girls, attempt to reach the Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 5,364 metres above sea level. All participants are students of government educational institutions, studying between Class 9 and Intermediate. The team will travel to Kathmandu on April 15 and begin their trek shortly thereafter.

Flagging off the expedition at his residence in Undavalli, Lokesh interacted with the students and sought to inspire them with a message of courage and self-belief. “Your journey to the Everest Base Camp is not just a trek, but a statement of your strength and determination. You possess a level of grit that many do not. Despite facing challenges and societal barriers, you have reached this stage, which is truly commendable,” he said.

Sharing a personal note, Lokesh highlighted that every family faces its own set of challenges, but overcoming them defines one’s character. “If nurtured and supported, individuals like you can bring transformative change to society. The government stands firmly behind you. Conquer these challenges and aim to conquer the world,” he added.

The Minister also underlined the importance of giving back to society. “As you grow, ensure that you help at least ten others in your journey. Let your success be so powerful that society learns to respect and celebrate your abilities,” he advised.

Lokesh reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting inclusive education, strengthening physical training in schools, and encouraging talent among differently-abled students. He said such initiatives would be continued annually to identify and support exceptional talent.

Wishing the team success, the Minister congratulated the students and posed for a group photograph, marking the beginning of an inspiring journey that blends courage, inclusion, and ambition.
