Emergency earns `2.35 crore, while Azaad grosses `1.5 crore on opening day
Kangana Ranaut’s much-awaited Emergency released on January 17, 2025, after several delays, and made an impressive `2.35 crore on its opening day. The film, in which Ranaut portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, has received critical acclaim for her powerful performance. It has become her biggest Hindi opener in the post-COVID era.
On the same day, Azaad, starring newcomers Aaman Devgan and Rasha Thadani, made a solid `1.5 crore. Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, the film’s heartwarming story about the bond between humans and animals has resonated with audiences. Azaad also marks a major achievement as the biggest opener for a newcomer film since the pandemic.
In other box office news, Pushpa 2 continued to perform well, despite the reloaded version with extra scenes failing to boost its collections significantly. The film has crossed `1200 crore globally but saw a slight dip in collections with `1-2 crore on average in recent days.
Other notable films include Gamechanger (`26.1 crore on its Hindi release), Fateh (`10.5 crore), and Yeh Jawani Hain Deewani (`18.12 crore from its re-release).
