Much-seen mafia drama

After three highly successful seasons, Mirzapur makes its much-awaited transition to the big screen with Mirzapur: The Movie. Directed by Gurmmeet Singh, the film brings back several popular characters while introducing a few new faces. It stays rooted in the action, politics, rivalry and power struggles that have defined the franchise. At the centre of the story is the battle for power, with one question driving the narrative: who will ultimately claim the throne of Mirzapur?

The first half takes its time introducing the characters and establishing the conflict. There are several references to the first season, which work as a refresher for those familiar with the series. At the same time, viewers who have not watched the show can understand the basic storyline without feeling lost.

The characters continue to retain the attitude and appeal that made them fan favourites. The first half effectively combines action, family drama, politics, business rivalry and power games, with moments of humour breaking the tension. The interval arrives at an engaging point and creates curiosity about what comes next. However, the screenplay becomes increasingly predictable. There are few genuinely unexpected turns, while the second half feels longer than necessary and could have benefited from tighter editing.

The dialogues are a definite highlight. Several exchanges are likely to receive whistles, with the scenes involving Pankaj Tripathi and Divyenndu standing out.

Actors’ performances

The returning cast remains one of the film’s biggest strengths. Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Rasika Dugal, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Abhishek Banerjee and Shweta Tripathi fit naturally back into their familiar roles. Pankaj and Divyenndu are particularly effective together, recreating the chemistry and intensity that fans have enjoyed over the years. The newer additions, including Ravi Kishan, Mohit Malik and Jitendra Kumar, also blend well into the narrative.

Direction

Gurmmeet Singh keeps the tone and atmosphere of Mirzapur intact. The action, political manoeuvring and power struggles feel consistent with the series, although the second half would have benefited from a faster pace.

Music

The music complements the story without taking attention away from it. Vaaroon and Saanson Ki Mala add romance, while the Rajasthani and Haryanvi tracks fit naturally into the action sequences.

FPJ verdict

Mirzapur: The Movie does not reinvent the franchise, but it delivers enough familiar action, drama and character moments to entertain loyal fans. The predictable storyline and slightly stretched second half keep it from becoming a standout theatrical experience. Still, followers of the series are likely to enjoy the return to this familiar world. And don’t leave immediately after the credits. The post-credit scene is worth staying back for.
