Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday held a telephonic conversation with Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian, condemning recent attacks on critical infrastructure in West Asia and stressing the urgent need to keep key maritime routes open and secure amid escalating regional tensions.

During the call, Modi conveyed greetings on the occasions of Eid and Nowruz, expressing hope that the festive season would bring peace, stability and prosperity to the region. He underlined India’s concerns over the deteriorating security situation, noting that attacks on essential infrastructure pose serious risks to regional stability and disrupt global supply chains.

The Prime Minister reiterated the importance of safeguarding freedom of navigation, particularly in vital international waters, and called for ensuring that shipping lanes remain open. His remarks come against the backdrop of rising tensions that have already begun to affect maritime movement and trade flows in the region.

Modi also appreciated Iran’s continued support in ensuring the safety and security of Indian nationals residing in the country, highlighting the importance of cooperation during times of crisis.

This marks the second conversation between the two leaders since the conflict began on February 28. Earlier, on March 12, President Pezeshkian had briefed Modi on the evolving situation in Iran and shared his assessment of regional developments. India had then expressed deep concern over the conflict and reiterated its longstanding position that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

The current tensions escalated following attacks involving the United States and Israel targeting Iran, which triggered retaliatory actions from Tehran against its neighbours and Israel. The situation has since intensified, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.

A key concern for the international community is the strategic Strait of Hormuz, which is controlled by Iran. The narrow waterway handles nearly 20 per cent of the world’s energy shipments, making it one of the most critical chokepoints for global trade. Since the outbreak of hostilities, shipping movement through the strait has been significantly restricted, impacting global energy markets.

In recent weeks, Modi has engaged with several world leaders, including those from Gulf nations and beyond, as part of India’s diplomatic outreach aimed at de-escalation and ensuring stability in the region. India has consistently called for restraint, dialogue and peaceful resolution to prevent further disruption to global trade and security.
