Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jaideep Ahlawat and Jim Sarbh join Mira Nair’s ambitious biopic on artist Amrita Sher-Gil

Filmmaker Mira Nair has officially announced her next feature film, Amri, based on the life of celebrated Hungarian-Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil. The film stars Anjali Sivaraman in the lead role, alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Jaideep Ahlawat and Jim Sarbh.

Set across Hungary, France and India in the early twentieth century, Amri traces Sher-Gil’s artistic journey and personal struggles as she emerged as one of the most influential modern artists of her time. Priyanka Chopra Jonas will play Madame Azurie and also serves as executive producer on the project. Jaideep Ahlawat essays the role of Sher-Gil’s father, Umrao Singh Sher-Gil, while Jim Sarbh portrays Karl Khandalavala.

Nair described the project as deeply personal and said Sher-Gil’s work had inspired her cinema for decades. The filmmaker added that the painter’s fearless artistic expression and understanding of India shaped her own storytelling sensibilities.

The film is currently completing production across India and Hungary. Nair has co-written Amri with Clara Royer and is producing the film alongside Samudrika Arora and Michael Nozik.
