Indonesian ferry fire kills 5, dozens missing

Surabaya: At least five people died and 41 were missing after a passenger ferry carrying 271 people caught fire off Indonesia’s Java island on Sunday, officials said. The Mutiara Sentosa 2, carrying 232 passengers and 39 crew members, was travelling from Surabaya to Makassar when the fire broke out off Sumenep regency. Thick smoke engulfed the vessel as passengers in life jackets gathered on the deck, with some jumping into the sea. Nearby vessels rescued 225 passengers and crew and recovered five bodies. Indonesian Navy deployed a warship to rescue people. The cause of the fire was unknown.
