Include Hyd liberation in textbooks: Dattatreya

Metro India News | Hyderabad : Former Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya on Wednesday called for the history of the Hyderabad liberation struggle and the sacrifices of freedom fighters who fought against the Nizam’s rule to be incorporated into school textbooks. He welcomed the Centre’s official observance of Hyderabad Liberation Day on September 17 and urged the Telangana government to officially commemorate the occasion.

Dattatreya was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a two-day photo exhibition organised by the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, at Parade Ground, Secunderabad. The exhibition showcases the struggle against the Nizam, the atrocities faced by people of Hyderabad State, the role of freedom fighters and key events leading to Hyderabad’s integration with India.

Dattatreya, who visited the exhibition along with Malkajgiri MP Eatala Rajender and former MLC and state BJP president N Ramchander Rao, said students should visit the exhibition and learn about the sacrifices made during the liberation struggle.

Eatala Rajender recalled instances of people being imprisoned for raising the slogan of ‘Vande Mataram’ and facing violence for hoisting the Tricolour. He stressed the need to preserve the history of the struggle and remember freedom fighters including Ramji Gond, Doddi Komuraiah and Chakali Ilamma.

Ramchander Rao said the younger generation should be made aware of the Hyderabad liberation struggle, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s role in the integration of Hyderabad State and the surrender of the Nizam. CBC & PIB Additional Director General Shruti Patil highlighted the significance of the exhibition and its role in familiarising younger generations with the history of Hyderabad Liberation Day.
