Science is the best thing to have happened to mankind. It has a role in everyday needs such as counting objects, measuring land, predicting seasons, and understanding natural events. Early scientific developments were driven by basic human requirements. That acquired knowledge gradually developed into various branches such as astronomy, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. The practical applications of these, later on led to technology and engineering, transforming human civilization.
Mathematics and astronomy were among the earliest sciences. The need to count and measure led to mathematical developments, while observing the Sun, Moon, and stars helped people create calendars and navigate across land and sea. Greek scholar Pythagoras became famous for his theorem related to the sides of a right-angled triangle developed based on logical reasoning and believed that numbers held the secrets of the universe.
Ancient Indian scholars, including Aryabhata, introduced the concept of zero and the decimal number system, both of which revolutionized mathematics. Persian mathematicians developed algebra, and the term “algorithm,” which is crucial to modern computing, is derived from the Latinized name of Al-Khwarizmi.
Physics and chemistry advanced through the study of matter, energy and natural forces. The Big Bang Theory explains the origin and the current expansion of the Universe from an extremely hot and dense state in space, billions of years ago. Important discoveries in electricity and magnetism, by Alessandro Volta and Michael Faraday, have paved way to electrical technology, telecommunications and modern industry.
Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection presented in his "On the Origin of Species", explained how living species changed over time and the diversity of life emerged forming a part of Evolutionary Biology and Genetics. Later on, Louis Pasteur's discoveries on germs and vaccines established the foundations of microbiology and preventive medicine, drastically improving human health and increased life expectancy all-over the world.
As knowledge of science progressed, its applications led to innovations in technology. Engineering transformed scientific principles into practical tools, machines, medicines, transportation systems, communication networks and computer technologies. Modern health care, agriculture, space exploration, advent of digital systems, are all built on centuries of scientific progress. Thus, science evolved from simple observations and practical needs into a systematic method of understanding nature.
Our ancestors asked simple questions such as “Why does the Sun rise and set?” “Why do people fall sick?” “Why do things fall to the ground?”, “Why Stars appear different in brightness” Such questions inspired generations of thinkers to explore nature and seek explanations.
Nicolaus Copernicus proposed “Earth revolves around the Sun”. At the time, this was considered revolutionary. Then came Galileo with his improved telescope to observe the heavens and discovered moons orbiting Jupiter, demonstrating that not everything revolved around Earth. His discoveries challenged accepted beliefs and eventually revolutionized astronomy and strengthened the scientific approach to knowledge.
One of the most famous stories in science is about Isaac Newton and the falling apple. Whether the apple actually hit his head or not, the story captures an important scientific curiosity. Newton wondered if the same force that pulls an apple to Earth also keeps the Moon in orbit. He later remarked that his achievements were possible because he was “standing on the shoulders of giants,” acknowledging the contributions of earlier thinkers. Science continues to evolve through curiosity, observation, and discovery.
