The Indian Federation of App Based Transport Workers (IFAT) has formally approached the Ministry of Labor and Employment with a set of comprehensive suggestions aimed at reforming the recently published Draft Rules under the Code on Social Security, 2020. The Draft Rules, published on 30 December 2025, mark a long awaited move toward operationalizing social security for gig and platform workers, a segment that has grown rapidly but has traditionally lacked formal protections.
Shaik Salauddin, Co Founder and National General Secretary of IFAT and Founder President of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers’ Union (TGPWU), submitted the recommendations on behalf of workers nationwide. A concern raised by IFAT pertains to a clause which states that a worker must be engaged as a gig worker for at least 90 days with a single aggregator or 120 days when work is spread across multiple aggregators, to be eligible for benefits.
IFAT has urged the removal of this clause, asserting that eligibility should not hinge on arbitrary time requirements that disadvantage those most in need. Another contentious provision is the clause which can render workers ineligible for social security benefits if their registration data remains un updated. IFAT wants aggregators to bear the cost of scheme contributions and ensure workers are kept informed about data updates, along with an effective grievance mechanism for any disputes.
IFAT has reiterated its commitment to constructive dialogue, underscoring that a collaborative approach between the government and stakeholders is key to transforming the Code on Social Security into an effective tool for worker welfare.
