In order to enhance transparency and accountability in higher education, Andhra Pradesh Minister for Education and IT Nara Lokesh has directed officials to ensure robust implementation of a face recognition-based attendance system from the upcoming academic year.

During a review meeting held at his Undavalli residence with senior education department officials, the Minister assessed the preparedness of institutions for rolling out the new system. Discussions covered government, aided, and private unaided colleges, including degree and engineering institutions, focusing on infrastructure readiness and data collection for facial recognition of students and staff.

Lokesh emphasised that the adoption of advanced technology in attendance tracking would significantly improve academic discipline and teaching quality. “Face recognition attendance will bring greater transparency and help monitor both student participation and faculty engagement more effectively,” he said.

Officials briefed the Minister on steps already taken to build databases, integrate systems, and ensure compliance across institutions. He instructed them to take comprehensive and foolproof measures to ensure smooth implementation without technical glitches or disruptions.

The initiative is part of the government’s broader push to modernise the education system using digital tools and data-driven governance. By minimising manual intervention and eliminating proxy attendance, the government aims to create a more accountable academic environment.

The meeting was attended by Education Department Secretary Kona Sasidhar and Higher Education Commissioner Narayana Bharat Gupta, among other senior officials.
