Experts call for stronger trauma care

The Hyderabad Chapter of International Trauma Care (ITC) conducted a one-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on Trauma Care at Osmania General Hospital on Saturday, bringing together leading experts, postgraduate medical students, nurses and paramedics to discuss the growing burden of trauma and the need for a systematic, multidisciplinary approach.

National ITC President Dr. Tanmoy Das, Dr. Ganapati of Erode, Dr. T.V. Ramakrishna of Chennai, Dr. Chandrasekhar and Dr. Raja Narsing Rao were among the experts who participated. Osmania Medical College Principal Dr. Raja Rao and Osmania General Hospital Superintendent Dr. Rakesh Sahayi were Guests of Honour. Dr. Pandu Naik, Head of Anaesthesiology, hosted the programme. The inauguration was presided over by Dr. G.V. Ramana Rao, Medical Director, EMRI and Vice-President of ITC Hyderabad Chapter. Dr. Ashima Sharma, Senior Professor of Emergency Medicine, NIMS, and Secretary of the chapter, facilitated the academic sessions.

Experts discussed initial assessment, pre-hospital challenges, damage-control resuscitation and surgery, airway management, pelvic and ocular trauma. Specialists from emergency medicine, EMS, orthopaedics, trauma surgery, anaesthesiology, critical care and ophthalmology shared best practices. A highlight was a live demonstration of primary and secondary trauma surveys using a moulaged patient with head injury and femur fracture.

Experts stressed the importance of a structured, time-sensitive response from the scene of injury through emergency care, surgery and critical care. They also urged greater awareness among bystanders to assist victims as Rah-Veers or Good Samaritans until professional help arrives. Dr. Ramana Rao said seamless coordination and regular simulation-based training could improve trauma outcomes. Dr. Sharma said ITC Hyderabad plans to extend structured training to medical colleges across Telangana. The chapter also plans Comprehensive Trauma Life Support (CTLS) courses, bringing together professionals from multiple specialties to strengthen Telangana’s trauma-care ecosystem.
