Cycling shorts: Turkish guv axed

Ankara: A Turkish provincial governor has been dismissed after photographs of him wearing cycling shorts at a public cycling event sparked political criticism and went viral on social media.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan removed Ardahan Governor Mehmet Fatih Cicekli (L) by decree on July 17, without giving a reason. Opposition and ruling party politicians said his attire was inappropriate for a senior public official. Cicekli defend­ed himself, saying the clothing was standard cycling gear and he actively promoted sports.

His dismissal has triggered a public campaign demanding his reinstatement. Over 10,000 people have signed a petition praising his efforts to promote youth activities, cycling and tourism.

Ozel launches party

Deposed Turkish opposition leader Ozgur Ozel on Friday launched the New Party after quitting the Republican People’s Party (CHP) with 90 lawmakers. Ozel, removed as CHP chief by a court ruling, said the party would challenge Erdogan ahead of future elections.
