The Cybercrime Police, Malkajgiri, cracked four cyber fraud cases last week and arrested seven persons in a coordinated pan-India operation. In one case, three accused were held for allegedly cheating a man of Rs 32.36 lakh by posing as women on Facebook and fabricating medical and marriage emergencies.

Police said the victim befriended a woman identifying herself as Sonia on Facebook. Within a week, she sought financial help citing a serious illness, prompting the victim to transfer money multiple times to bank accounts shared by her. Later, Sonia introduced him to another woman, Shruthi, who also sought money on various pretexts and promised to marry him.

Subsequently, the women’s associates contacted the victim, falsely claiming Sonia had died and threatening to implicate him in her death unless he paid more money. Fearing legal trouble, the man transferred additional funds.

The accused used fake identities throughout the fraud. After the victim lodged a complaint, police arrested Thorthi Shashi, Thorthi Vamshi and Gampala Sravan in connection with the case. Further investigation is underway.
