The Telangana High Court granted permission to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to construct a boundary wall for Pyaranagar dump yard site between February 13 and 18. The civic body has plans to establish a dump yard near Nallavally–Pyaranagar village in Gummadidala mandal. However, the locals have been protesting and formed Rythu Ikya Karacharana Samithi to fight against GHMC’s move.
The proposed dumping yard is to come up in 152-acres. This facility aims to alleviate the burden on the Jawahar Nagar dump yard in Hyderabad. The capital generates 7,500 metric tonnes of garbage and is dumped at Jawahar Nagar site.
Despite receiving clearance from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the project has encountered significant opposition from local residents and farmers. The major concerns of the local residents is that the whole area would get polluted and the air and water quality would be deplete.
Also, the farmers fear that the soil would get destroyed. There is a sizable vegetable production in the region. In the meantime, the Air Force Academy has raised objections citing safety concerns for aircraft and human life. This dump yard falls within the local flying area of this training establishment. A letter to the district collector too has been written by the Wing Commander and Airspace Safety and Inspection Officer.
Officials of GHMC say that the site is being set up with advanced European technology and all eco-friendly measures would be taken to mitigate negative effects on the environment.
