A 36-year-old man from Sudan has regained the ability to stand and walk after undergoing a complex knee reconstruction at Medicover Hospitals, Hitec City, Hyderabad. The patient had suffered a severe knee injury three years ago and underwent multiple surgeries in Sudan. His knee eventually fused in a fixed, bent position, leaving him with severe stiffness, pain, extensive scarring and an old, badly fractured kneecap. Several hospitals had considered further reconstruction too risky.
He was evaluated by Dr. Koteshwara Prasad Veeragandham, Senior Consultant – Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, who planned a multidisciplinary treatment. As the tissues around the knee were extensively scarred, the Plastic Surgery team, led by Dr. Rajasekhar Madala, first performed corrective procedures to prepare the area.
Dr. Veeragandham subsequently carried out a hinged total knee replacement, a specialised implant used when the knee’s bones and ligaments can no longer provide adequate stability. Despite significant bone loss, distorted anatomy and multiple previous surgeries, the procedure restored the knee’s alignment, stability and movement. The patient recovered without complications and has begun structured rehabilitation. Dr. Veeragandham said the reconstruction was challenging because the skin, bone and ligaments had all been damaged, requiring staged treatment with the plastic surgery team.
