In a major boost to the development of Andhra Pradesh’s capital city, the Union Cabinet has approved the construction of a large residential complex for Central Government employees in Amaravati. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has sanctioned Rs 1,234.91 crore for the project, marking a significant step towards strengthening the Centre’s institutional presence in the state capital.
The project, which will be fully funded by the Central Government through budgetary support, will be implemented by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. According to official sources, pre-bid activities have already commenced and the tendering process is underway. Notably, this will be the first General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) project undertaken by the Centre in Amaravati.
Spread across 17 acres, the residential campus will feature 11 high-rise towers with 1,504 apartments ranging from Type-II to Type-VI categories, catering to officials of different ranks. The project will also include basement parking facilities capable of accommodating 1,972 vehicles. The total built-up area is estimated at 31.3 lakh square feet.
The Centre said the project is aimed at providing quality housing for Central Government employees working in Andhra Pradesh, particularly in Amaravati, while reducing commuting challenges and improving administrative efficiency. Officials believe that residential facilities close to workplaces will enhance employee productivity and strengthen coordination among Central Government departments operating in the state.
Designed as a sustainable and environmentally friendly development, the complex will adhere to green building standards and is expected to secure a minimum four-star GRIHA rating. Energy efficiency, water conservation, and the use of eco-friendly construction materials will be key features. The campus will also house civic amenities such as a bank, ATM, post office, community hall, food court, shopping complex, guest house, and barrier-free facilities for persons with disabilities.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu welcomed the Cabinet’s decision, describing it as a major milestone for Amaravati. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Cabinet, stating that the project would strengthen the presence of Central institutions in Andhra Pradesh, improve governance, and contribute significantly to the long-term development of the capital city. The project is also expected to generate substantial employment, creating nearly seven lakh person-days of work annually during construction and around 50,000 person-days every year during the maintenance phase.
