Bangui: More than 100 people were killed after an artisanal gold mine collapsed in Zamboye in the Central African Republic on Tuesday, with rescuers continuing to recover bodies on Thursday.
Several underground tunnels collapsed, triggering a landslide, a court said. Red Cross volunteer Gervais Ganagoro said more than 10 bodies were recovered on Thursday morning alone, while the number of people still buried remained unclear.
An investigation has been opened into the collapse and possible criminal liability. Artisanal mine accidents are common in the country, where miners often work in poorly reinforced pits with little protection.
