The Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute has completed 25 years of service and will celebrate its Silver Jubilee on Monday at HICC Novotel, Hyderabad. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will attend as the chief guest, while hospital Chairman and Hindupur MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna will preside over the event.

Established in memory of Basavatarakam, wife of legendary actor and former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao (NTR), the hospital was conceived with the vision of providing world-class cancer treatment at affordable costs. NTR initiated the project in 1988, inspired by her final wish and determined to make quality cancer care accessible to common people. With support from the Indian diaspora, medical experts and philanthropists, the hospital was inaugurated in 2000 by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee with an initial capacity of 100 beds.

Over the past 25 years, the institution has grown into one of India’s leading comprehensive cancer care centres. It now has 650 beds and offers advanced diagnosis, treatment and research facilities.

The hospital treats more than three lakh outpatients and around 90,000 inpatients annually. More than 65 per cent of its patients belong to economically weaker sections and receive support through schemes such as Aarogyasri and Ayushman Bharat. The institution has also performed over 8,000 cancer surgeries and 86 bone marrow transplants. Apart from treatment, the hospital conducts cancer awareness and early detection programmes through mobile screening units in remote and tribal areas. The Silver Jubilee celebrations will commemorate its contribution to cancer care, research and humanitarian service over the past quarter century.
