Telangana’s mangoes & sweet oranges set for a bountiful season as cultivation expands

As summer approaches, Telangana is gearing up for a season of abundant fruit harvests, particularly with Mangoes and Sweet Oranges. The state, known for its thriving horticulture sector, has seen remarkable growth in fruit cultivation, reinforcing its position as a major producer in India.

According to the latest data from the Horticulture Department of Telangana, the total area under mango cultivation in 2023-24 spans an impressive 3,06,401 acres, yielding a staggering 12,40,368 tonnes. Key districts contributing to this output include Jagtial, Nagarkurnool, Khammam, and Rangareddy, with Hanumakonda and Warangal leading in total production. The iconic “King of Fruits” continues to be a cornerstone of Telangana’s agricultural economy, benefiting from advanced farming techniques and improved market accessibility.

Similarly, Sweet Oranges (Batavia) or called as “Battayi” in Telugu, have seen consistent expansion in cultivated area, now covering 58,043 acres with a production output of 3,74,550 tonnes. Nalgonda district stands out as the highest producer, followed by key contributions from Jogulamba Gadwal, Narayanpet, and Wanaparthy. The high demand for Telangana’s sweet oranges, known for their juicy pulp and rich flavor, continues to boost both local and export markets.

Over the years, Telangana’s fruit cultivation sector has flourished due to strategic initiatives, including improved irrigation facilities, farmer subsidies, and research-driven best practices. The introduction of high-yielding varieties, coupled with efficient supply chain management, has significantly increased productivity, offering promising prospects for growers and traders alike.

With the onset of the summer season, markets are set to be flooded with fresh, aromatic mangoes and sweet oranges, much to the delight of consumers. As Telangana continues to scale new heights in horticulture, both domestic and international markets eagerly anticipate this year’s harvest, reinforcing the state’s reputation as a premier fruit hub in India.
