United States arrests influencers as Britain seeks extradition over rape and human trafficking charges

Miami: Social media influen­cers Andrew Tate (R) and Tristan Tate were arrested in Miami on Saturday after British authorities sought their extradition on rape and human trafficking charges, placing the United States at the centre of a long-running international legal case.

The brothers, who hold dual US and British citizenship, were taken into custody by the US Marshals Service on a sealed warrant. They are expected to appear in a federal court in Miami next week.

British prosecutors said they were seeking the broth­ers’ extradition over allegations that they raped and trafficked women between 2010 and 2017. The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service also ann­ounced 38 additional charges involving four more alleged victims. The Tate brothers moved to Romania in 2016 and were arrested there in 2022 on separate allegations of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. They have denied all allegations, and the Romanian case has stalled due to legal and procedural issues.

Their lawyer dismissed the latest UK charges as “filth and slander” and said the brothers would contest the allegations in court. —AP
