Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday announced a major push to strengthen the education sector. He said the government has launched a Rs 1,700 crore infrastructure development programme for educational institutions located within the Outer Ring Road limits.
The Chief Minister said Telangana currently has 27,000 government schools with nearly 19 lakh students and 1.5 lakh teachers, maintaining a teacher student ratio of 1:17. He noted that despite the presence of 12,000 private schools educating 38 lakh students, the government is determined to make public education the most trusted system in the state.
He announced that the education budget allocation, currently at 8 per cent, would be gradually increased to 15 per cent. Revanth Reddy also revealed plans to establish 100 Young India Integrated Schools in 100 constituencies with an investment of Rs 20,000 crore.
Highlighting welfare measures, the Chief Minister said nutritious meals, milk and ragi malt would be provided in government schools, while a breakfast pilot programme has already been introduced in Kodangal. He added that the government is spending Rs 1,000 crore on education kits that include uniforms, textbooks, notebooks, school bags and sportswear.
The Chief Minister said Telangana is preparing a new education policy that would become a model for the country. He also announced that 25 teachers had been sent to Finland to study educational practices and another 500 outstanding teachers would be sent abroad in the future.
Anti-drug awareness drive in schools
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy also met Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla and briefed him about the state government’s plans to launch a large scale anti-drug and anti-addiction awareness initiative in schools from June 12, coinciding with the reopening of educational institutions.
