Heavy rains swell & batter Vamsadhara, Nagavalli Rivers

APSDMA managing director Prakhar Jain on Friday cautioned riparian inhabitants to be alert as Vamsadhara and Nagavali rivers are receiving floodwater inflows. Following three days of copious rainfall in the southern state under the influence of the recent deep depression, several ponds, streams and rivers are swollen, especially in the North Andhra region.

"Floodwater inflows are rising in Vamsadhara and Nagavalli rivers due to heavy rains. Riparian inhabitants should take precautions. Swimming in rivers and fishing is dangerous," Jain said in an official release.

According to the Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) managing director, floodwater inflows amounted to 24,639 cusecs and outflows to 23,250 cusecs at Thotapalli in Nagavalli River.

He said the second warning level was issued at Narayanapuram, where floodwater inflows and outflows amounted to 76,000 cusecs. At Gotta Barrage on Vamsadhara River, Jain said the first level warning is continuing. He said floodwater inflows amounted to 43,860 cusecs and outflows 46,197 cusecs at the barrage. Both Vamsadhara and Nagavalli flow through Srikakulam district.

Further, Jain noted that emergency teams are on standby to attend to any exigency.

CM Naidu directs officials to utilise rains to fill water resources across AP

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday directed officials to utilise the current rainfall brought by the deep depression to fill all available water resources across the state. "Naidu directed officials to utilise the present rainwater to fill all available water resources across the state. He instructed officials to fill reservoirs in the Krishna and Godavari deltas as well as other water bodies in their respective areas," a press release said, quoting the CM.

Around 11,000 cusecs of water were flowing into the Prakasam Barrage at Vijayawada from the Munneru and other catchment areas, the release said. Naidu instructed officials to utilise inflows from the Godavari to fill the Yeleru Reservoir with 24 TMC of water.

He directed that water be supplied through the Polavaram Left Canal to water bodies up to Anakapalli. According to officials, heavy rainfall has been recorded in 16 districts, with Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Parvatipuram Manyam, Kakinada, the Godavari districts, Eluru, Krishna and NTR districts among those significantly affected.
