August 22, 2026: India’s renewable energy transition is gathering momentum. But as the country adds clean energy at scale, the next opportunity is to ensure that every part of the energy ecosystem becomes more efficient and less resource-intensive. On Akshay Urja Diwas, Vedanta Power Limited highlighted its efforts in this direction, focusing on energy and resource efficiency across its power operations as an important complement to India’s growing renewable energy base.
India’s ambition of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based power capacity by 2030 represents a fundamental transformation of its energy mix. Delivering the full benefits of this transition, requires more than adding renewable generation but it also requires an enabling power ecosystem to continuously improve how it uses fuel, water and other resources.
This is where energy efficiency becomes an important enabler of the clean energy transition. By improving the efficiency of existing infrastructure and introducing cleaner and more resource-efficient practices, the power sector can reduce its overall resource intensity while supporting the expansion of renewable energy.
Vedanta Power is advancing this approach through a combination of alternative fuel use, resource efficiency, water optimisation and circularity across its operations. Vedanta Power’s renewable-energy integration efforts include the adoption of solar power for captive needs, alongside electrification of its fleet through electric vehicles (EVs), further reducing its dependence on conventional energy sources and supporting a lower-carbon operations.
At Talwandi Sabo Thermal Plant in Punjab, approximately 3.61 lakh metric tonnes of biomass were utilised during FY2025-26, accounting for around 5.21% of total fuel consumption. The initiative provides an alternative use for agricultural residue while enabling existing power infrastructure to incorporate a supplementary, non-conventional fuel source.
Water efficiency is another key area where the company is working to reduce resource intensity across its operations. At Vedanta Power’s Meenakshi Energy Limited in Andhra Pradesh, saline water is used for operational requirements, enabling the facility to achieve zero freshwater consumption.The company has also planted 8.75 lakh trees cumulatively across its operational locations as part of its efforts to enhance green cover and support biodiversity.
