The Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) Plant at Thukivakam, operated by the Tirupati Municipal Corporation, has received commendation from the visiting 16th Finance Commission delegation for its efficient operations and sustainable practices.
On Thursday morning, the Finance Commission team comprising Ritvik Pandey, Anne George Mathew, K.K. Mishra, Abhay Meenan, Aditya Pant, and Amruta visited the plant and thoroughly examined its various units. These included dry and wet waste management, composting facilities, bio-methanisation units, and construction waste recycling sections.
Principal Secretary of Municipal Administration and Urban Development Suresh Kumar, Joint Secretary J. Nivas, Tirupati District Collector Dr. Venkateswar S., and Municipal Commissioner Ms. Maurya briefed the delegation on the plant’s operations and its role in sustainable waste management under the "Waste to Wealth" concept.
Officials explained how dry waste collected across Tirupati is processed, with recyclable plastics sent to cement factories. Wet waste is composted and turned into organic manure, which is then sold to farmers and horticultural departments. Organic waste from markets and hotels is used to produce biogas, which is further commercialized.
The officials highlighted that approximately 25 tonnes of construction and demolition waste are processed daily, yielding six types of materials, including fine sand and gravel. These are then used to manufacture paver blocks. Additionally, about 150 tonnes of wet waste and 75 tonnes of dry waste are processed daily. Treated wastewater from the plant is also being sold to industries for reuse. The Finance Commission team lauded the efforts of the Municipal Corporation in establishing a sustainable and replicable model of solid waste management.
