The Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has strongly advocated for Hyderabad to be the host city for the 2036 Olympics. He emphasized that Hyderabad is better equipped than Ahmedabad and other cities in India, citing its infrastructure, previous experience in hosting major sports events, and global aspirations, while participating in the India Today Conclave 2025 in New Delhi on Thursday,
The CM said he already proposed the idea to Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and requested the Olympic Association to visit and inspect the facilities in both cities before making a decision.
On delimitation and caste census
On the issue of delimitation, Revanth expressed concern that the proposed changes, based on population growth, would unfairly disadvantage South Indian states. He called for all-party meetings to decide the future course of action, advocating for using the 1971 census for population-based decisions. Regarding the caste census, Revanth defended Congress' stance, emphasizing the need for increased representation for backward classes in education, employment, and politics.
Gujarat vs Telangana
CM Revanth Reddy criticized the Gujarat model as outdated, comparing it to the traditional, slower-paced Test match format in cricket. He said the Telangana model, which is focused on development, welfare, and good governance, is the "T20 version," fast-paced and focused on contemporary needs. He highlighted the state's achievements in various sectors like vaccines, pharma, and IT, positioning Hyderabad as a global competitor rather than merely competing with cities like Ahmedabad and Bengaluru.
On Hyderabad’s development
Responding to claims that Chandrababu Naidu's government laid the foundation for Hyderabad's development, Revanth emphasized that the credit for the city’s growth spans centuries, from the Quli Qutub Shah dynasty to the British era, and through the leadership of various Chief Ministers since Independence. He pointed out that neither Naidu nor Y. S. Rajashekar Reddy could be credited for specific landmarks like the Charminar, Golconda or the Secunderabad Cantonment, which were established by earlier rulers.
On federalsim and policy differences with Modi
Revanth accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of undermining the federal spirit by prioritizing investments in Gujarat in the name of the 'Viksit Bharat' initiative. However, he clarified that his disagreement with Modi is on policy matters and that, as CM of Telangana, he respects the Prime Minister but will continue to advocate for state-specific issues and grants. Revanth also stated that Telangana’s financial situation, with a debt of Rs 7 lakh crore, requires careful management and strategic planning.
On three-language policy and democratic values
CM Revanth voiced opposition to the forcible implementation of the three-language policy, advocating for people to have the freedom to choose the languages they wish to learn. While expressing pride in his own proficiency in Hindi, Revanth stated that the policy should be implemented with flexibility, respecting the diverse linguistic landscape of India. He also took a dig at the BJP's tactics, accusing them of suppressing opposition through agencies like CBI and ED, in contrast to Congress' more democratic approach, which he said was the reason for BJP’s victories in assembly elections in various states.
