Power utilities gearing up to meet summer demand

With a view to ensure uninterrupted quality power supply in line with the rising demand during the Yasangi (Rabi season) and the upcoming summer, the power utilities have taken all necessary measures.

A review meeting was held at the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana (TGSPDCL) Corporate office, presided over by Sandeep Kumar Sultania, Principal Secretary of the Energy department along with Chairman and Managing Director, TGSPDCL Musharraf Faruqui.

The current power supply situation and preparations for the expected surge in electricity demand during summer were discussed. Based on the current electricity consumption trends, a significant rise in demand is anticipated in the coming months.

In January of last year, Telangana's peak power demand was 13,810 MW, whereas this year, on January 31st, it reached a record 15,205 MW. Previously, the peak demand of 15,000 MW was recorded in March, but this year it was reached in January itself.

In Southern Discom's jurisdiction, the demand increased from 8,679 MW last year to 9,589 MW this year. Similarly, in the Greater Hyderabad region, the demand rose from 3,018 MW to 3,334 MW. Compared to last January, there has been a 10 percent increase in peak demand this year.

So far, Telangana's highest-ever power demand was recorded on March 8, 2024, at 15,623 MW. This year, the peak demand is expected to reach 17,000 MW, with Southern Discom accounting for 10,000 MW and Greater Hyderabad for 5,000 MW. Despite the increasing demand, power utilities are fully prepared to meet the supply requirements, Sandeep Kumar Sultania said.

Senior Engineers have been appointed as nodal officers for each district, and the electricity control room (1912) has been strengthened. Officials have been directed to remain highly vigilant, ensuring uninterrupted power supply and avoiding any inconvenience to consumers.

Southern Discom Directors Dr.N. Narasimha, Nand Kumar, Sai Baba, Sudha Madhuri, along with Chief Engineers Pandya, Bala Swamy, Anand, Narsimha Swamy, Sivaji, Chakrapani, Kamesh and Prabhakar and Superintending Engineers from the Operations and other departments were present in the meeting.
