In a remarkable boost to public education, 52 students from government junior and vocational colleges across Andhra Pradesh will be felicitated by Education Minister Nara Lokesh on Tuesday, for their outstanding performance in the Intermediate examinations.

The students, who have secured top marks in various streams, have proven that government institutions are now on par with private colleges in terms of academic excellence. The award ceremony will also include an interactive session between Minister Lokesh and the students, where he is expected to personally commend them for their exceptional achievements.

Among the 52 awardees, 28 students come from academic streams such as MPC, BiPC, CEC, HEC, and MEC in Government Junior Colleges, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs), APR Junior Colleges, Adarsha Schools, and High School Plus institutions. The remaining 24 students are from government vocational colleges who have demonstrated outstanding performance in their respective skill-based courses. Notably, six of the honorees are students who have shown extraordinary talent and capabilities in unique areas.

This year’s Intermediate results have set new records. Under Minister Lokesh’s stewardship, the government junior colleges have made significant strides. The pass percentage for second-year Intermediate students reached a historic high of 69%, while first-year results marked a 47% pass rate — the second highest in the last decade. These figures reflect a significant turnaround in public education outcomes.

Vocational education, too, has witnessed record-breaking success. The first-year vocational stream saw a 64% pass rate, while the second year achieved an all-time high of 82%. These improvements underscore the government’s focused efforts to enhance vocational training and create employment-ready youth.

Since taking charge, Minister Lokesh has introduced a series of reforms aimed at strengthening Intermediate education. These include the revival of key schemes such as the midday meal program and free distribution of textbooks — both of which were previously discontinued. The government also promoted 217 principals in 2024 after a five-year gap, introduced centralized assessments from October, and began evaluating teachers based on students’ internal test performance.

In addition, government junior colleges saw adjustments in academic schedules, improved access to study material for underperforming students, and the launch of the “Take Care” mentorship initiative. These steps have significantly contributed to the rising pass percentages and the overall performance of students.
