Managing joint pain in winter

It's a common experience: as the temperatures drop, joint pain seems to intensify. You are not alone if you find that your joints become stiffer and more painful as the weather turns cold. This isn't just an old wives' tale; there's a real connection between cold weather and joint pain, particularly for those with conditions like arthritis.

A 2014 study showed that a significant 67.2% of people with osteoarthritis felt that weather affected their joint pain.

Holistic approach 

l While over-the-counter medications like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or acetaminophen can help relieve joint pain, a holistic approach to managing joint pain involves a combination of lifestyle adjustments and natural therapies. 

l Keeping warm is a crucial first step.  

l Regular exercise and stretching can help keep your joints from becoming stiff. 

l Soak in a warm bath or using heating pads when you are resting or sleeping. 

l A balanced diet is essential for ae pain. 

Acupressure

One holistic approach to addressing joint pain due to cold is to stimulate the meridian point Tw 4 (see figure) with a jimmy or apply fenugreek seeds on the meridian Tw 4 point (see figure) for 24 hours, changing the seeds and tape daily after bathing. This method is proposed to help with removing painful obstructions of any joint caused by cold. 

While these self-care strategies can help manage cold-related joint pain, it's important to know when to seek professional medical help. According, joint symptoms warrant a trip to the doctor if they: Last three days or more, occur several times within a month.
