KIRANMAI TUTIKA | AMARAVATI
The ancient port town that was bustling with business in the 17th century is about to regain its past glory and is pegged to become the ‘Gateway to Amaravati’. A vision document was unveiled by its native and now Minister Mines, Geology, and Excise, Kollu Ravindra here on Sunday. The Minister said that its development is his personal responsibility.
Speaking at the ZP Convention Hall, Kollu Ravindra presented a multi-faceted blueprint for the town’s revival, which includes the development of the port, tourism, skill training, health, sanitation, and industrial infrastructure. “Machilipatnam once stood proud as the second municipality in the country but suffered from prolonged neglect,” said Ravindra. “Now is the time to capitalize on opportunities and reclaim our past glory.”
In this regard, the minister announced to complete the construction of Machilipatnam port by 2026, besides the development of Manginapudi Beach under the Swadesh Darshan scheme. He also announced to establish a Global Capability Centre to train youth and women, alongside MSME and mega industrial parks across 6,300 acres to promote entrepreneurship.
The minister also emphasized the importance of community participation and political neutrality in achieving developmental goals. He called for collective efforts to protect public institutions like National College and announced a memorial in honor of Andhra Bank founder Pattabhi Sitaramayya. The district collector D.K. Balaji, present at the event, confirmed progress on port and fishing harbor works, and shared plans for waste management and tourism development under central government schemes.
The minister announced that the Bandaru Beach Festival would be held from May 15, inviting 175 MLAs including the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister. “Let’s all unite beyond politics for the growth of Machilipatnam. Together, we can turn this historic town into a thriving economic and cultural hub,” Ravindra concluded.
