The railway station redevelopment work of Khammam is gaining pace. According to a press release, 40 per cent of the work has been completed. The redevelopment work is going on under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) aimed at upgrading railway stations across India.
Khammam station is important it is at the intersection of the Delhi - Chennai and Hyderabad - Vijayawada railway lines and play a crucial role for trains traveling between North and South India. The station serves as a major transportation hub for coal mines in the nearby Singareni Collieries which contributes significantly to the local economy, with many industries, including cement, steel and paper industries etc.
It has an average footfall of 12,988 passengers per day and annual earnings of Rs 29.64 Crores. About 83 trains halt at Khammam station. This station is also having stoppage for important superfast trains in several destinations like New Delhi, Howrah, Chennai, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Secunderabad and Tirupati etc.
40 railway stations across the Telangana are being redeveloped with an estimated cost of Rs 2,737 crores, to provide modern passenger amenities and convert them into growth centers to the regional population.
