The Andhra Pradesh Government has accelerated efforts to modernize the Budameru canal, with Minister for Irrigation Nimmala Rama Naidu reviewing the project's progress during a meeting at the state secretariat. The state cabinet has sanctioned a budget of Rs 39.05 crore for urgent repairs to address three breaches in the canal. Minister Rama Naidu stressed the need for immediate tendering and swift completion of the repairs to prevent further damage and improve water management.
The Budameru Diversion Channel expansion, initiated during the TDP government (2014–19), aimed to increase its capacity to 37,500 cusecs at a cost of Rs 464 crore. While 80% of the work was completed before the administration changed, the remaining 20% has since stalled despite available funds.
Minister Rama Naidu criticized the previous administration for canceling key expansion plans, including the enlargement of the Enikepadu UT (Under Tunnel) to Kolleru stretch, which was crucial for flood mitigation and efficient water flow.
To expedite pending works, the minister directed officials to draft an action plan to complete the remaining 20% of the canal expansion. Discussions also included increasing the capacity of the Old Budameru Channel from Velagaleru Regulator to Kolleru, with proposals for a parallel channel to handle an additional 10,000 cusecs and reduce flooding risks.
The review meeting emphasized integrating Budameru flood control measures into disaster management initiatives. Minister Rama Naidu revealed that proposals have been prepared to seek central government support for effective flood mitigation.
The municipal, revenue, and disaster management departments will collaborate to present a comprehensive flood prevention plan to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for approval. Minister Rama Naidu reaffirmed the government's commitment to completing the modernization project, enhancing flood management, and maximizing agricultural and irrigation potential in the region.
