The Telangana Women and Transgender Organisations’ Joint Action Committee (WT-JAC) in a meeting held in the city on Thursday, decried the arrests and assaults on protesting University of Hyderabad (UoH) students, especially women.
Prof. Rama Melkote criticized successive governments for prioritizing neoliberal and capitalist interests over ecological concerns. Prof. Bhavani of UoH recalled past resistance to land giveaways and stated that the disputed land spans 534 acres, with 134 acres already allotted to the TNGOs' Colony.
Akash, Vice-President of HCU Students' Union, warned that clearing the 400-acre catchment area would impact local lakes. He accused the government of falsely denying forest cover and wildlife presence. He also refuted claims of a revenue survey, stating only Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC) officials visited the land.
WT-JAC President Sandhya extended solidarity with the students, emphasizing the need for a collective action plan against land encroachments. Venkat Reddy, National Convenor of the MV Foundation, sarcastically suggested that state officers work from home instead of displacing forests for IT expansion. Prof Haragopal, Shantha Sinha, senior editors K. Srinivas, N. Venugopal, and activists like PoW Sandhya and Kondaveeti Satyavathi, were also present in the meeting.
